Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill 2008 has been released in the UK at £1,400 per 12×75. It is being reported that the volume of stock coming to market is limited and allocations are only being given to those that bought the 2006 vintage.
The wine has already traded on Liv-ex for £1,800 per 12×75, a 28.5% increase on this morning’s release price.
Stephan Reinhardt (The Wine Advocate) is the only major critic to have scored the 2008 vintage so far. He awarded the wine 96 points and described it as “most likely one of the finest of this century and one of the greatest Churchills of modern times”.
Further support for the wine can be found from Paul Graham, Director of Business Development at Pol Roger, who claimed the 2008 vintage was the “best vintage since 1988 and the most investible Churchill we’ve ever made”.
Prices for Sir Winston Churchill are not closely correlated to critic scores. Instead, vintages have appreciated in price with the passing of time. For those lucky enough to secure an allocation, the 2008 may look like an exciting opportunity. The 2004 and 2006 vintages, however, also offer relative value for money.
