The Liv-ex 1000 index – the broadest measure of the market – gained 2.8% in September to close on 360.5. This is another new record high for the index, which has risen 9.1% year-to-date.

All of the Liv-ex 1000 sub-indices made steady gains in September. The Burgundy 150 rose by 7.2%. Out of the 150 constituent wines of the index, 91 increased in value.

The Italy 100, which had a sluggish August, rose by 5.9%. Italy was in the spotlight with the release of the highly-scored Solaia 2015 and heavy trading of Giacomo Conterno vintages.

Despite new releases from Chile and Argentina, the Rest of the World index remained relatively flat, rising by only 1.08% in September.

As the chart above shows, the Burgundy 150 continues to rise, widening the gap between it and all other indices. The Champagne 50 has outperformed the Bordeaux Legends 50, becoming the second-best performing index in September.

The newly launched California 50 index, which is not part of the Liv-ex 1000, closed September on 300.96, down 2.6% on the previous month.
