Vieux Chateau Certan 2017 has been released at €168 per bottle ex-negociant, down 13% on the 2016 release of €192. It is being offered by the trade at £2,064 per 12×75, a decrease of 10% in sterling terms on the 2016 release of £2,300 per case.
The volume of stock coming to the market is down 15% on last year.
Critics have praised this year’s Vieux Chateau Certan. Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine 94-96 points. In his tasting note he said that “this Vieux Chateau Certan manifests more complexity and profundity as it aerates, delivering genuine, spine-tingling mineralité on the persistent finish”.
Lisa Perotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate), however, was more generous and scored the wine 96-98 points. She commented that the wine has “seamless freshness and fantastic length”.
Liv-ex members also enjoyed this year’s Vieux Chateau Certan, placing it as their second favourite wine in 2017.
Prices for Vieux Chateau Certan are 86% correlated to score. Based on today’s release of £2,064 per 12×75, Liv-ex’s ‘fair value’ methodology places the 2017 above the trend line.
Buyers looking for value may wish to consider the 2006 and 2014 vintages, which carry higher scores and are available at significant discounts to today’s release. At almost half the price, the 2012 vintage also looks attractive.
