Leoville Las Cases 2017 has been released at €144 per bottle ex-negociant, down 20% on the 2016 release of €180. It is being offered by the trade at £1,776 per 12×75, a decrease of 15% in sterling terms on the 2016 release of £2,100 per case.
On average, Liv-ex members estimated that today’s release price would be €146.52, a miss of just 1.7%.
Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine 93-95 points. In his tasting note he said that the wine “gains intensity with aeration but it is not as detailed as last year’s 2016”.
Lisa Perotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate), however, was more generous and awarded the wine 96-98 points. In her tasting note she said that “this should age incredibly!”
Prices for Leoville Las Cases are 73% correlated to score. Based on today’s release of £1,776 per 12×75, Liv-ex’s ‘fair value’ methodology places the 2017 significantly above the trend line. Followers of Lisa Perotti-Brown MW, however, may find value in this year’s release.
Buyers looking for other options may wish to consider the 2014 and 2008 vintages, which carry higher scores and are available at discounts to today’s release. The 2016 vintage also offers relative value.
