Pape Clement 2017 released

By May 3, 2018Bordeaux 2017

Pape Clement 2017 has been released at €61.20 per bottle ex-negociant, down 7% on the 2016 release price of €66. It is being offered by UK merchants for £760 per 12×75, a decrease of 4% in sterling terms on the 2016’s release price of £790.

The volume of stock being offered has been reduced by over 50% on last year, largely due to frost.

Neal Martin scored the wine 92-94 points on Vinous, describing it as “classic in style”. Writing for Decanter, Jane Anson commented that, “there is no doubt that it has been very well constructed, and it will age confidently in the medium to long term”. She scored it 92.

Prices for recent vintages of Pape Clement mostly fall into two brackets: £600-800 per 12×75 and £1,400+. Today’s release positions it among the lower-priced vintages and almost exactly on our ‘fair value’ trend line, as shown below. This may make it attractive to loyal followers of Pape Clement.

Buyers looking for value, however, will note that other higher-scored vintages are available in the market at similar prices (and below their ‘fair value’). These include the 2012, which was named as one of Robert Parker’s top five reds of 2012, and the highly-scored 2015 and 2016.

Pape Clement Blanc has also been released. It came out at €97.20 per bottle ex-negociant, down 10% on the 2016 release price of €108. It is being offered by the trade at £1,200, up from £1,185 on last year.
