Parker bolsters trade

By November 9, 2011Fine Wine Market

Parker's unrestrained enthusiasm at yesterday's Magical 20 tasting in Hong Kong has had a ripple effect on secondary market trading. As Parker's effusive comments made their way across the Twittersphere, his apparent favourites, Angelus 2009 and Cos d'Estournel 2009, made a swift return to trading screens. With the critic firmly behind the '09s, both wines traded on Liv-ex at slightly higher prices than we've seen in recent months. Cos d'Estournel climbed to £2,190 per case – up from £2,100 in September – and Angelus reached a four-month peak of £2,200. Palmer 2009 also saw a kick up in demand.

As we mentioned yesterday on the blog, Parker repeatedly claimed at the tasting that the Magical 20 are of First Growth quality. And with the wines' physical release fast approaching, will buyers reach for more 2009s as the week progresses?

The chart below shows the current prices of the Magical 20. As you can see, prices vary widely – so much so that Brane Cantenac 2009 and Malescot St Exupery 2009 are available at a fifth of the price of Trotanoy.
