The Burgundy Market in 2025

  • While Burgundy market confidence remains low, there are signs of a balancing out of sentiment
  • Burgundy’s white wines continue to weather the downturn better than the reds
  • As buyers have run scared, Burgundy’s market share has slipped since 2022
  • 2025 has so far seen a notable uptick in trading volumes of Regional Burgundy. It appears that towards the lower end Burgundy prices might be reaching a level to entice buyers
  • UK buyers continue to over index on Burgundy buying, particularly at the Grand Cru level

Let’s address the elephant in the room straight away – the tiny Burgundy 2024 vintage. Yes, it will be miniscule, and yes, it is still a year until it is released. Nevertheless, it will provide vital context for understanding the release prices of the 2023s, and the current and future direction of the Burgundy market.

Elephant addressed, for now we can turn to the topic at hand – the bounteous, heterogeneous, recently released 2023s and the market as it stands today. It is no secret that Burgundy prices soared during the 2021-2022 bull run, with cheap credit and a surge in demand from collectors new and old driving up price levels for established and up-and-coming producers. And it is well known that as the cost of credit rose and demand dried up, Burgundy prices have tumbled. With confidence at historically low levels, prices continue to fall.

Burgundy market overview

Burgundy 150 vs other Fine Wine 1000 sub-indices

Over the past two years, the Burgundy 150 has fallen further than any other sub-index of the Fine Wine 1000, down 30.2%. Over five years, it is up 16.7%, with the Champagne 50 and Italy 100 the only other sub-indices to record a rise over the same period (up 29.4% and 18.2% respectively). A deeper look into the performance of the white and red components adds further nuance.

Burgundy 150 evolution since January 2022

In the rarefied atmosphere of the Burgundy 150, there has been a definitive split between the recent performance of the whites and reds. The whites, requiring less cellaring, have naturally maintained a healthier rate of consumption and demand-supply balance. Average price also comes into play here. At the peak of the market in September 2022, the average Market Price for the Burgundy 150 reds, driven by DRC, was nearly five times that of the whites. In short, their prices had further to fall. These factors combined have resulted in the whites weathering the downturn far better – they are still 4.4% above their January 2022 levels compared to the reds which are 21.4% below.

Market share evolution

As Burgundy’s prices soared in 2022, its market share peaked at 26.0%. This came mostly at the expense of Bordeaux, whose share fell from 41.7% in 2020, to 37.7% in 2021, and down to 34.8% in 2022. As buyers have run scared, Burgundy’s market share slipped back to 22.6% in 2024 and 19.3% 2025 year-to-date.

Sentiment check

Bid:offer ratio

The bid:offer ratio for the Burgundy 150 topped out in October 2021 at 7.14. In other words, at the market peak, the total value of bids for the Burgundy 150 was over seven times the value of offers. It now sits at 0.23, the lowest of any sub-index of the Fine Wine 1000. Buyers remain risk averse, and at this very top end, where the average trade price per 12×75 case 2025 year-to-date sits at over £8,500 (down from a peak of £18,600 in 2022), it is not hard to see why.

Burgundy 150 risers and fallers

There are, however, some indications of a balancing out of sentiment, with 2025 seeing the highest number of Burgundy 150 components increase in value in over two years. While the risers’ gains remain modest and are still outweighed in value by the losses registered by the fallers, this does perhaps indicate a movement towards greater stability.

Burgundy Trade Overview

Burgundy trade since the downturn mirrors the wider market. Participants remain active with trade count holding up. But buyers are taking on less stock per trade, and at markedly lower average transaction values.

Trade evolution – Burgundy vs the wider market

What is notable is that so far in 2025, transaction volumes are up on 2024. This doesn’t appear to be a seasonal variation. Compared to the same period in 2024, average Burgundy trade volumes in 2025 are up 6.4%.

A deeper look reveals that Regional Burgundy trade is responsible for this uptick in trade volumes. This explains why the average Burgundy trade value year-to-date is 25.6% below where it was for same period last year.

With the average cost per litre having fallen 36% since 2022 for Regional Burgundy, it would appear prices are now at a level to entice buyers.

Trade evolution – Burgundy by classification

The breadth and depth of the Burgundy market

One might expect that as confidence has dissipated and market participants have gravitated towards the perceived safer bets of long-established producers, the breadth of Burgundy wines traded would have narrowed. This is not the case. The number of unique Burgundy brands (LWIN7s) traded in 2024 was 3.7% above where it was in 2022. Conversely the number of unique Burgundy vintages (LWIN11s) traded in 2024 was 3.7% below the 2022 peak.

Burgundy Trade Share by Buyer Geography

While UK buyers have become less fundamental to Burgundy purchases over the past five years, compared to the wider market they continue to over index on Burgundy buying. As we’ve reported on over the past six months, US buyers have come to the fore, with 2024 the first year that they contributed the greatest share of purchases. Nevertheless, US buyers currently take a smaller share of Burgundy purchases than their average share across all regions (28.9% vs 35.4%).

Trade Share by Wine Region and Buyer Geography

Interestingly, so far this year US buyers have accounted for the greatest share of Burgundy Premier Cru trade value, having edged ahead of UK buyers.

While UK buyers’ overall share of Burgundy purchases has consistently fallen over the past five years, since 2022 their share of Grand Cru purchases has remained flat.

Critics’ view on Burgundy 2023 – abundance and riches

As has been written extensively, the 2023 vintage was one of bountiful volumes, the largest in Burgundy’s history according to BIVB. William Kelley notes that, in many cases, Pinot Noir yields were at their highest since 1999. Despite the size of the crop, Kelley notes that the 2023’s are ‘more consistent than I had feared they might be’, while warning that ‘this is not a homogenous vintage’.

Neal Martin suggests a reasonable title for the vintage would be ‘The Lord Giveth and Vignerons Taketh Away’. At their best, the 2023s are imbued with a sense of charm and sensuality that will encourage early drinking (although Martin suggests that they have the ‘balance and energy’ to reward longer cellaring).

At the other end of the spectrum, less quality-driven producers were able to produce large volumes which naturally resulted in more diluted wines. Interestingly, in a vintage which one would assume will be looked back on as one of high yields and volumes, some quality-minded producers actually ‘cropped less that in 2022 once they had sorted the fruit at reception’.

While this is a heterogeneous vintage, or as Kelley notes ‘I frequently had the impression that I was encountering not one vintage, but rather two or three’, it is worth comparing average ratings to other recent vintages. Martin’s average rating is the lowest of the vintages considered, with Kelley putting it above the 2017 and 2021.

Neal Martin and William Kelley average Burgundy vintage ratings

Average ratings taken from 105 brands which both critics have rated each consecutive vintage from 2017 to 2023. For the full list of brands, please see the appendix.

At the end of his article, Neal Martin writes: ‘You might not like the prices, as I suspect many will maintain rather than lower them, but these wines will give immense pleasure’. On the matter of prices, Kelley welcomes the elephant back into the room: ‘With the derisory 2024 harvest on the horizon, smaller even than frost-ravaged 2016, only a few growers have reduced prices, even if few have actually increased them’.

2023’s release prices

Average release prices calculated using 95 brands with ex-London prices available for each consecutive vintage from 2020 to 2023. For the full list of brands, please see the appendix.

To generalise, one might say that release prices are more or less flat on the 2022s. In our 2024 Year in Review we wrote ‘while surely tempting to pre-emptively account for limited cashflow coming from the 2024s, it is unlikely that the market would react well to 2023s released at the same level as the 2022s’. That appears to have been what has happened. Reports are of a short-lived flurry at the start of the campaign, followed by an abrupt drying up of demand.

It is perfectly understandable why one would want to hold release prices with 2024 yields reportedly up to 50% down on the average. However, the market tends to be more dispassionate, focussing instead on value, supply, and demand. While these factors will surely have hindered the recent campaign, in the longer-term the tiny 2024 crop might in fact benefit Burgundy.

It appears that so far in 2025, prices, and perhaps balance sheet pressure, are reaching such levels that market participants are gritting their teeth and committing to clear out stock. In Burgundy we are seeing this at the lower end. One would imagine that prices of the upper echelons will also reach a point that releases the floodgates. Early indications would suggest that as the 2023s trickle onto the secondary market, their prices will soften. The average offer of those already available is 11.4% below the ex-London release price. With the prospect of a minimal influx of 2024s to interrupt the clear out, it might well be that come the release of the 2025s, collectors will once again be ready to open their cellar doors.

Conclusion

It is a fool’s errand to try to imagine what would have happened to release prices if Burgundy had been blessed with better weather in 2024. What we can say is that there are early indications that prices are getting to a level to inspire higher volume trades, which might well hasten the return to a healthier demand-supply balance in Burgundy.

The market, however, remains risk averse, and it is likely that a longer period of price stability will be necessary to instil confidence back into the market. This represents an opportunity to perhaps start to bring the new generation of collectors on board. Lower prices expand the pool of potential buyers and drinkers, paving the way for long-term demand.
