  • Penfolds, Grange 2020 has been released at £4,740 per 12×75.
  • Angus Hughson (Vinous) said the 2020 ‘has all the elements for a long life with impressive levels of extract and tannins, but lacking the delicacy of a great vintage’.
  • Today’s release comes at a premium to any other vintage of the past decade available on the market.

Penfolds Grange 2020 has been released at £4,740 per 12×75, up 1.3% on the 2019’s opening price (£4,680 per case). Since the 2019’s initial release, its price has fallen by 12.3% and now sits at £4,106 per 12×75.

Penfolds recently reported strong growth figures for 2024 in its key Asian market, thanks to a recovery in China since tariffs were lifted in March, alongside growth in Hong Kong, Thailand, and Taiwan.

Critical response

Erin Larkin (Wine Advocate) awarded the wine 95 points, noting that it is ‘a nice wine… lighter than the preceding 2019. Both vintages had their challenges, but this 2020 season has yielded an “easier” feeling wine’.

Jancis Robinson called the 2020 ‘very rich and heady. But lower key than many vintages’. Awarding it a score of 18++ after tasting over five days, she recommended aeration ‘for at least the first two decades of this exceptional wine’s life.

Writing in July 2024, Angus Hughson (Vinous) awarded the wine 95 points, suggesting a ‘couple more years in the cellar will bring all the pieces together before a two-decade drinking window’.

Pricing analysis

Today’s release comes at a premium to any other vintages available on the market. Given its tepid critical reception, buyers may instead turn to opportunities in back-vintages.

The 2010, 2012, 2016 and 2018 vintages received an impressive 99-point score from The Wine Advocate, and are all available at a discount to today’s release. The 2010 and 2012 vintages have recently entered their drinking windows and may be of interest.

While the 2013 is more expensive than the above-listed vintages, it received a score of 100 points from Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW ( then at The Wine Advocate). At an 11.5% discount to today’s release, the wine may also be worthy of consideration.
