Critical Analysis
Neal Martin (Vinous) most recently tasted the 2009 in December 2019, awarding it 98 points. He noted that the 2009 ‘is very focused, with impressive salinity on the finish that lingers nicely. This is an extraordinarily beautiful Latour’.
Tasting the 2009 back in 2010, Robert Parker (Wine Advocate) rescored it up to 100 points from the 98-100 points he gave it en primeur. He was unequivocal in his praise: ‘Francois Pinault and his director, Frederic Engerer, have pulled out all the stops to produce one of the most monumental Latour’s ever made’.
Lisa Perrotti Brown MW (Wine Independent) tasted the 2009 in March 2024, awarding it 100 points (the same rating as she gave it when at the Wine Advocate). She called it ‘flat-out delicious right now but promises to reward the patient’.
Pricing Analysis
According to Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology, Market Prices of Latour are correlated with Neal Martin scores (68.7%). The 2009’s current Market Price (£9,480 per 12×75) sits well above the Fair Value Line.
It’s hard to see how today’s release price could offer end consumers value, regardless of what a reasonable ex-château premium might be.
The 98-point 2005 is currently offered at £7,150 per 12×75, and represents significantly better value.
