As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Rauzan-Ségla 2023 has been released at €60 per bottle ex-négociant, down 28.6% on the 2022 release (€84).

It is being offered by the international trade for £720 per 12×75, down 28.7% on the 2022s opening price (£1,010 per 12×75).

Critical response

According to William Kelley (The Wine Advocate), ‘the 2023 Rauzan-Ségla shows considerable promise’. He awarded a score of 94-96 points, describing aromas of ‘cherries, dark berries and plums mingled with hints of pencil shavings and violets’.

‘One of the most memorable wines of the vintage, it was nothing short of stellar on the four occasions I tasted it’, said Antonio Galloni (Vinous), awarding a score of 96-98 points.

James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson) gave a score of 17/20 points. While he comments that the wine has a ‘reserved nose’, he adds that it has ‘plenty of depth’.

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a score of  93-95 points. He describes ‘a very aromatic bouquet of wilted violets, black cherries and hints of camphor, with a faint oyster shell note lingering in the background’.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent), called the wine ‘gorgeous’, awarding a score of 95-97 points.

Pricing analysis

According to the Liv-ex Fair Value methodology, Market Prices of Château Rauzan-Ségla are 51.4% correlated with scores from Neal Martin, Liv-ex members’ most influential critic of Bordeaux En Primeur wines. As shown in the chart below, today’s release falls above the Fair Value regression line. Buyers looking for value opportunities have options in back vintages.  

Several vintages fall below or on the trend line and represent Fair Value.

The 96-point 2020 vintage may be of interest. Described by Neal Martin as ‘deeply impressive,’ it is available at a Market Price of £630, a 12.5% discount to today’s release.

The 95-point 2015 vintage notably falls directly on the trend line. Available at a discount of 2.8% to today’s release (£700), it hails from a proven vintage and benefits from additional time in bottle.

Although lower-scoring, the 94-point 2017 and 2021 also fall below the trend line and are available at a discount of 33.3% and 20.6%, respectively, to today’s release.
