As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Pavie 2023 has been released at €234 per bottle ex-négociant, down 22.0% on the 2022 release (€300).
It is being offered by the international trade for £2,784 per 12×75, a 22.1% decrease on the 2022’s opening price (£3,576 a case).
At this price, today’s release is one of the most expensive vintages of the past decade available on the market. Buyers looking for value may turn to back vintages, such as the 2018 and 2020. See more pricing analysis below.
Critical response
According to Jane Anson, the 2023 Pavie feels at the top of its game. She scored the wine 96 points, calling it ‘intense, concentrated and skillfully constructed’.
Neal Martin (Vinous), awarding a score range of 95-97 points, calling it ‘an excellent Pavie in the making’.
James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson) awarded the wine a score of 17.5/20 points. According to him, the 2023 is ‘an elegant Pavie, the power reined in and discreet’.
‘The 2023 Pavie is fabulous, rich, dense and explosive in the glass’ said Antonio Galloni (Vinous), who awarded a score of 95-97+ points.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) called the wine ‘breathtaking’, awarding a potentially perfect 98-100 points. In her tasting note, she describes ‘scents of blueberry pie, cassis, and preserved plums, eventually giving way to a gorgeous perfume of violets, star anise, cedar chest, and iron ore’.
Pricing analysis
While today’s release comes in at a discount to last year’s, it remains one of the most expensive vintages of the past decade currently available on the market. For those looking for value opportunities, there are options in back vintages
The 96-point 2018 and 2020 vintages are both available at a discount to the 2023 and may be of interest to buyers. Of these two, fans of Lisa Perrotti-Brown may opt for the 2020. The critic awarded the wine a perfect 100-point score, calling it ‘gorgeous’. At a Market Price of £2,200, it is available at a 21.0% discount to today’s release.
The 2016, hailing from a proven vintage and benefitting from additional time in bottle, may also be a compelling option. Alongside the 2018 and 2020, the wine received 96 points from Neal Martin and is available at a discount to today’s release.
