Critical response

Jane Anson described the 2023 vintage as a ‘classical Margaux , with the savoury quality of the best wines of the year, a ton of fine tannins and with a sculpted architecture’. She awarded the wine a score of 98 points, her joint-second highest of this vintage.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awarded the wine a potentially perfect score of 97-100 points. Calling the wine ‘fabulous, sensual, silky and exceptionally polished’, he notes aromas of ‘spice, new leather, menthol, licorice and rose petal’.

Neal Martin (Vinous) calls the 2023 a ‘quintessential Margaux’, awarding a score of 97-99 points. He adds that the wine is ‘exquisitely defined and very focused with supremely well integrated oak’.

James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson) gave a score of 17.5/20 points. According to him, the wine possesses ‘a certain drive and persistence but perhaps not quite the depth of top years’.

According to Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent), ‘the palate is elegantly crafted, with fabulous tension creating an exhilarating sense of energy in the mouth, offset by firm fine-grained tannins to support the vibrant red and black berry layers, finishing long and perfumed’. She awarded a score range of 97-99 points.

WIlliam Kelley (The Wine Advocate) gave a score of 95-97 points, noting aromas of ‘cassis, violets, spring flowers and sweet tobacco, framed by a deft touch of new oak’.
