Critical response

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awarded a score range of 92-95 points. He described the wine as ‘dark and virile with real intensity’, adding that ‘the 2023 will be a fascinating wine to follow’.

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded 92-94 points, commenting that ‘this restyled Margaux indicates a welcome new direction for the estate and evidences greater selection in the vineyard’.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown (The Wine Independent) gave a barrel score of 93-95 points. According to her ‘scents of freshly crushed blackberries, cassis, and black raspberries leap from the glass, leading to touches of menthol, dark chocolate, licorice, and violets in the background’.

‘This estate, which was formerly one of the Médoc’s poster children for over-ripeness and over-extraction’, said William Kelley (The Wine Advocate), ‘is assuredly coming in from the cold’. He awarded 92-94 points.

‘Margaux elegance at last’, said James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson), awarding 17+/20 points.

Pricing analysis

Given the impressive critical response, today’s release may be of interest to buyers. The 2023 remains, however, one of the more expensive vintages currently available on the market. Buyers looking for alternatives may consider slightly lower-rated, less expensive back vintages.

The 2019 vintage, at a Market Price of £475, is one of the least expensive vintages of the past decade available on the market. Receiving a score of 92 points from Neal Martin, it is available at a discount of 20.2% to today’s release.
