  • Château Haut-Bailly 2023 has been released at £1,080 per case.
  • Neal Martin has awarded the wine a barrel range of 96-98 points, calling it ‘outstanding’.
  • At this price, the 2019 vintage looks like good value.

As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Haut-Bailly 2023 has been released at €90 per bottle ex-négociant, down 25% on the 2022 release (€120 per bottle).

It is being offered by the international trade for £1,080 per 12×75, a 25% decrease on the 2022’s opening price (£1,440 a case).

Buyers looking for options among back-vintages might consider the 2014 and the 2019. See more pricing analysis below.

Critical response

Neal Martin (Vinous) ranks this as ‘one of the standout wines in Pessac-Léognan, perhaps in Bordeaux itself’ at 96-98 points.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) also awarded 96-98 points. She called the wine ‘graceful and opulent’, noting ‘showy scents of boysenberry preserves, stewed plums, and fruit cake, followed by underlying suggestions of Indian spices, menthol, graphite, and lavender, with a hint of cardamom’.

‘One of the most sensual, elegant wines I have tasted here’ said Antonio Galloni (Vinous), who awarded a barrel score of 94-96 points.

Yohan Castaing (The Wine Advocate) awarded the wine a barrel range of 94-96 points, adding that it ‘displays a darker, more brooding character than in previous years’.

Pricing analysis

The 2019, which received 97 points from both Jane Anson and Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, may present a compelling option for buyers. With a current Market Price of £720 per 12×75, it is available at a 33.3% discount to today’s release.

The 2014 may also be of interest. It is scored lower than more recent vintages – Neal Martin awarded it 93 points when he tasted the wine in March 2024. However, the 2014 is currently entering its drinking window and with a Market Price of £550, it is available at a 49.1% discount to today’s release.
