As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign,  Château Gruaud Larose 2023 has been released at €60 per bottle ex-négociant, down 13.8% on the 2022 release (€69.60 per bottle).

It is being offered by the international trade for £716 per 12×75, a 14.5% decrease on the 2022’s opening price (£840 a case).

Critical response

Jane Anson awarded the wine a score of 95 points, describing it as ‘old school and delicious’.

According to James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson), the 2023 is ‘beguiling’, with ‘discreet but present structure’. He awarded a score of 17+/20 points.

‘This is a terrific example of the vintage at its finest’, said Antonio Galloni (Vinous), who awarded a score range of 94 –96 points.

Neal Martin (Vinous) described the 2023 vintage as a ‘classic Gruaud Larose that confirms the ongoing improvement at this estate’. He gave the wine a barrel score of 93-95 points.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) gave a barrel score of 94-96 points. According to her, it ‘leaps with vibrant notes of cassis, fresh blackberries, and mulberries giving way to nuances of tapenade, iris, pencil shavings, and iron ore’.

Pricing analysis

According to the Liv-ex Fair Value methodology, Market Prices of Château Gruaud Larose are 66.8% correlated with scores from Neal Martin, Liv-ex members’ most influential critic of Bordeaux En Primeur wines. As shown in the chart below, today’s release falls above the Fair Value regression line. Buyers looking for value opportunities have options among back vintages.  

Falling below the Fair Value line, the 2019 vintage may be a compelling alternative for buyers. It received 96 points from Neal Martin, his joint-highest score of the past decade (alongside 2022). It is available at a Market Price of £660, a 16.9% discount to today’s release.

Also falling below the Fair Value line, the lower-scoring 2016 and 2020 vintages might also be of interest. They are available at a discount of 12.0% and 13.0% to today’s release, respectively.
