Critical response

According to Jane Anson ‘finesse and saline limestone character are on full display’ in the 2023 Canon. She awarded a score of 96 points .

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) awarded the 2023 Canon a potentially perfect 98-100 points, a score she gave to only seven wines this vintage. She described the wine as ‘absolutely ethereal’ praising its ‘compelling tension’ and ‘long and fragrant’ finish.

Neal Martin (Vinous) gave a score of 94-96 points. While he calls the wine ‘excellent’, he adds that the 2023 is ‘perhaps not quite as complex as the very best recent vintages’.

Also awarding 94-96 points, Antonio Galloni (Vinous) describes the 2023 as ‘a wine of classicism and reserve, less overtly expressive than most recent vintages’.

According to William Kelley (The Wine Advocate), the 2023 Canon is another brilliant wine from a property whose excellence can almost be taken for granted. He awarded a barrel range of 96-98 points, noting aromas of ‘mulberries and raspberries mingled with spices, rose petals, licorice and violets’.

James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson) called the wine ‘elegant and true to its limestone-plateau origin’ and gave it a score of 17+/20 points.

Pricing analysis

The 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2020 vintages all fall below the trend line and represent Fair Value.

Receiving Neal Martin’s second highest score of the decade of 96 points, the 2018 vintage may be a compelling option for buyers. With a Market Price of £850, it is available at a 20.9% discount to today’s release.

Fans of Jane might also consider the 2019 vintage, which she awarded a perfect 100-point score. Though it falls above the trend line, it is available at an 11.5% discount to the 2023.

The slightly lower-rated 2014 vintage, at a Market Price of £580, may serve as a good entry point into Château Canon.
