Critical response
‘My favourite Calon since the 2020 vintage, hands down’ said Jane Anson, awarding the wine 97 points.
Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded a barrel score of 92-94 points. According to him ‘it has a tight cohesive bouquet of predominantly black fruit intermixed with wild hedgerow, tobacco and melted tar’.
According to William Kelley (The Wine Advocate), ‘the 2023 Calon Ségur is another en primeur success for this resurgent Saint-Estèphe third growth’. Describing aromas of ‘cassis, pencil shavings, wild berries and plums’, he awarded a score of 94-96 points.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) called the 2023 ‘a powerful, young Calon Ségur that will clearly need time to come together’. He awarded a score of 94-96 points.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) awarded 95-97 points. She describes notes of ‘fresh blackcurrants, juicy blackberries, and redcurrant jelly leap from the glass, followed by hints of rose oil, cumin seed, and mint tea’.
James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson) gave the wine a score of 17+/20 points. He adds that the 2023 has ‘less mid-palate volume than 2022 but some might prefer this slenderer version’.
Pricing analysis
While today’s release comes at a discount to last year’s, it remains more expensive than other highly-rated physical vintages available on the market. Buyers looking for value opportunities have options in back vintages.
The 2019 may be a compelling alternative for buyers. The wine received a score of 94 points from Neal Martin and is available at an 8.1% discount to today’s release. Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW awarded the wine 98 points, her joint-highest score of the decade.
Both Jane Anson and Neal Martin awarded the 2016 vintage their highest scores of the decade, 98 and 96 points respectively. Though available at a slight premium to today’s release, it may also be of interest to buyers.
Since their original releases, the 2016 and 2019 vintages have increased in value by 27.5% and 10.7% respectively. Prices of the 2015, 2017 and 2018 have also increased over time, reflecting Calon Segur’s growing popularity and resilience in the face of a downward-moving market.
