Critical response

Neal Martin (Vinous) called the 2023 ‘classy’ and ‘more classically hewn compared to the 2022’. He gave a barrel score of 92-94 points.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) also awarded 92-94 points, adding that it ‘will need a bit of time to come together’.

Jane Anson, describing the wine as ‘inky, richly oaked, right-on brand, with cloves, cassis, liqourice and cocoa dusting’, gave a score of 92 points.

William Kelley (The Wine Advocate) was more effusive in his praise, calling the 2023 ‘one of the most suave, classy vintages from this estate in some years’. He awarded a barrel score of 93-95 points.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) gave the wine a score of 92-94 points. She noted ‘classic scents of blackcurrants, kirsch, and pencil shavings followed by nuances of crushed rocks and cardamom’.

Pricing Analysis

At its release price of £390, the 2023 vintage is one of the less expensive vintages of the past decade available on the market today. While, at 92-94 points, it offers reasonable value, there are other attractive options available in back vintages.

The 93-point 2020 vintage benefits from additional time in bottle and may be of interest to buyers. It is available at a Market Price of £395.

While from a less prominent vintage, the 2017 Malescot St. Exupéry received 93+ points and, at a discount of 33.3% to the 2023, may be an attractive option.

The 2018 vintage, receiving Neal Martin’s joint-second highest score of the decade of 94 points, is available at a 7.7% premium to today’s release.
