Critical response
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) called the 2023 La Fleur-Pétrus ‘fabulous’, awarding a barrel score of 94-96 points.
Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded a score of 92-94 points. According to the critic, ‘the palate is sleek and smooth on the entry, with svelte tannins, a perfect line of acidity and a very harmonious finish that fans out nicely’.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) scored the wine a barrel range of 93-95+ points. She notes aromas of ‘ripe plums, boysenberries, and pencil shavings followed by nuances of lilacs, iron ore, and tapenade’.
According to William Kelley (The Wine Advocate), the 2023 is ‘very attractive, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, sweet cherries and plums mingled with hints of incense and spices, discreetly framed by new oak’. He awarded a barrel score of 94-96 points.
‘Really refined palate, the fruit juicy and pure, the tannins extremely fine’, said James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson), who awarded the wine a score of 17/20.
Pricing analysis
At this release price, the 2023 is one of the less expensive vintages of La Fleur-Pétrus available on the market today. While today’s release may present reasonable value to buyers, there are options for those interested in back-vintage opportunities.
Available at a Market Price of £1,280 – a 14.7% discount to today’s release – the 2014 vintage may be of interest. The wine received a score of 93 points from Neal Martin, and benefits from extra time in bottle.
While available at a small premium to today’s release, the 2015 vintage received a 95-point score from Neal Martin, his joint-highest of the decade, and may present reasonable value to buyers.
Fans of Antonio Galloni may opt for the 2019 vintage. The critic awarded the wine his highest score of the past decade, 98 points. It is currently available at a Market Price of £1,750, a premium of 16.7% to today’s release.
