Critical response

Antonio Galloni (Vinous), describing the wine as ‘powerful and dense’, awarded a barrel score of 94-97 points.

Awarding a score of 95-97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) describes ‘exuberant notes of fresh black and red currants, kirsch, and wild blueberries followed by hints of pencil shavings, violets, and mossy tree bark’.

Neal Martin (Vinous) gave the wine a score of 92-94 points, adding that this vintage of Canon la Gaffelière is ‘excellent, but a bit more Left Bank in style’.

According to Jane Anson, the wine ‘lifts not just on the finish, but from the first moments, stretching out with a kick of slate and crushed rocks’. She awarded a score of 94 points.

‘Lighter in concentration but well made’, said James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson), awarding 16.5/20 points.

William Kelley (The Wine Advocate) gave a barrel score of 90-92 points, describing ‘aromas of minty berries, plums, pencil shavings, dried herbs and bay leaf, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and crunchy palate underpinned by tangy acids and chalky tannins’.

Pricing analysis

According to the Liv-ex Fair Value methodology, Market Prices of Château Canon la Gaffelière are 70.8% correlated with scores from Neal Martin, Liv-ex members’ most influential critic of Bordeaux En Primeur wines. As shown in the chart below, today’s release falls below the Fair Value line – a positive sign. But, so too lie other physical vintages.

Several other vintages, notably the 2016, 2019 and 2020 vintages fall below the Fair Value line and represent Fair Value.

Of these, the 93-point 2020 and 2019 vintages may be compelling alternatives for buyers. They are available at a 7.2% and 1.7% discount respectively to today’s release. Fans of Jane Anson may opt for the 2019 vintage, which received her joint-highest score of the decade, 95 points.

While coming in at a premium of 16.7% to today’s release, the 2016, from a proven vintage and benefitting from extra time in bottle, may also be of interest.
