Critical response

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) described the 2023 as a ‘sensual, silky wine’. Awarding it 94-96 points, he believes it ‘remains one of the best relative values in Bordeaux’.

William Kelley (The Wine Advocate) gave the wine a barrel score of 93-95 points. According to him, it offers up ‘aromas of dark cherries, cassis and spices framed by creamy new oak’.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) awarded 94-96 points, describing ‘scents of blackcurrant jelly, boysenberries, and black raspberries, giving way to notions of charcoal, pencil lead, and a waft of tree bark’.

‘Such an accomplished wine’, said Jane Anson, awarding 96 points.

Neal Martin (Vinous) calls the 2023 ‘a worthy follow-up to the 2022’, awarding a barrel score of 93-95 points.

Describing the wine as ‘fine, linear and long’, James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson) awarded 16/20 points.

Pricing analysis

According to the Liv-ex Fair Value methodology, Market Prices of Château Brane-Cantenac are 57.1% correlated with scores from Neal Martin, Liv-ex members’ most influential critic of Bordeaux En Primeur wines. As shown in the chart below, today’s release falls above the Fair Value regression line. Buyers looking for value opportunities have options in back vintages.

The 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021 vintages all fall below the trend line and represent Fair Value.

Of these, the 96-point 2020 vintage, Neal Martin’s joint-second highest scoring of the decade, may be a compelling option. At a Market Price of £464, it is available at a 13.1% discount to today’s release.

Fans of Antonio Galloni may opt for the 2019 vintage. The wine received his highest score of the decade, 97 points, and is available at a 6.4% discount to today’s release.

From a proven vintage and benefitting from extra time in bottle, the 96-point 2016 may also be of interest to buyers.
