As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Clos du Marquis 2023 has been released at €38.4 per bottle ex-négociant, 36% down on the 2022 release (€60 per bottle).
It is being offered by the international trade for £462 per 12×75, down 36.4% on the 2022’s opening price (£726 per 12×75).
While coming in at a lower price than the 2022 vintage, the new release remains at a higher price than many of the similarly-rated vintages of the past decade. See more pricing analysis below.
Critical response
Jane Anson’s (Inside Bordeaux) tasting note included ‘squid ink, cassis, bilberry, roses, love the intensity and gorgeous salinity of this wine’. She awarded it 94 points.
William Kelly (The Wine Advocate) scored the wine 91-93 points, highlighting that it is ‘a taut, concentrated wine that will reward some patience’.
Neal Martin (Vinous) gave the wine 91-93 points, noting that ‘It has a complex bouquet, comprising a mélange of red and black fruit, cedar and subtle touches of violet – very charming’.
Clos du Marquis 2023 pricing analysis
Back-vintages of Clos du Marquis provide plenty of options for buyers looking for value.
The 2020, while down 13% on its ex-London release price (£450/cs), has 92 points from Martin and is available at a 15.6% discount on today’s release. The 2018 and 2014 vintages also have 92 points from Martin and are both currently available at £410 per 12×75.
The 2016 vintage may also be of interest. While it comes at a slight premium to today’s release at £475 per 12×75, it boasts the added years in bottle as well as 94 points from Neal Martin and 95 points from Lisa Perrotti-Brwon MW (The Wine Independent).
