What’s happening in the market?
Burgundy led trade over the weekend, taking 35.8% of total trade by value. The boost in market share, (up from 21.1% last weekend) was driven by wines from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Leroy and Emmanuel Rouget.
Bordeaux followed with 20.9% of regional trade by value. Château Lafite Rothschild accounted for 30.8% of Bordeaux trade, led by the 2010 while Château Mouton Rothschild took 14.1%, largely due to the 2021 changing hands.
The newly released Sassicaia 2021 as well as the 2015 and 2016 kept Italy’s trade share buoyed through the weekend at 18.5%. Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona, Brunello di Montalcino 2019 was also amongst the top traded wines.

Super Tuscan Ornellaia recently released its 2021 vintage at £1,850 per 12×75, flat on the 2020 release. The new release comes at a slight premium to back vintages on the market.
Critical reviews
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awarded the wine 99 points. As the chart below shows, the 2021 could be a tempting option for Galloni fans. In his tasting note, he said that ‘the 2021 Ornellaia captures all the magic of this sensational vintage on the Tuscan Coast’.
James Suckling also scored it 99 points, proclaiming that ‘this is the best Ornellaia for the cellar in years’.
Monica Larner (Wine Advocate) gave the wine a lower score of 96 points. In her tasting note, she remarks that the wine ‘offers an extra layer of richness, generosity and plushness that shapes a very open-knit and exuberant Tuscan red’.
Fair Value analysis
According to Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology, Ornellaia Market Prices are 57% correlated with Wine Advocate scores.
Looking at the chart above, this release is coming to market above the regression line, suggesting there is value in the back vintages.
Buyers looking for other options may want to consider the 2019 vintage, which was awarded 97+ points by Antonio Galloni and 97 points by Monica Larner and is available at a discount to the 2021. In her tasting note, Monica Larner called the wine ‘a beautiful expression of coastal Tuscany’.
The 2019 also boasts a perfect 100-point score from Lisa Perotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent). In her review, she wrote that ‘this 2019 Ornellaia is a beautiful, luxurious, and vivacious wine’.
Other vintages which come in below the ‘Fair Value’ line include the 2017, 2014 and 2012 – these wines present compelling options for buyers looking for value.
