The Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000 is Liv-ex’s broadest measure of the market, tracking 1,000 wines from across the world. Below, we’ve rounded up the most popular wines in the index in the last 30 days, starting from the most searched-for and in-demand wines, to the most traded by value and volume.

Liv-ex members will receive weekly Market Updates outlining the most popular wines in each of the Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000 sub-indices. To receive these and more exclusive insights, request a demo here.

The most popular wines in terms of search volumes on Liv-ex are unsurprisingly dominated by some of the biggest (and most expensive) brands in the world. Four vintages of Château Lafite Rothschild, three of Pétrus and two of Château Mouton Rothschild feature on the list. Château Beychevelle 2020 stands out as the only wine with a Market Price below £1,000 per case.

As with the list of most searched-for wines in the index, the most in-demand wines (wines with the highest number of bids in the last 30 days) were from outstanding vintages and renowned brands. Bordeaux was the most prominent region, with Château Mouton Rothschild 2015 topping the list. Wines from the 2015, 2016 and 2019 vintages, considered some of the best in recent years in Bordeaux, made up most of the top ten.

Also on the list are the 2008 and 2012 vintages of Louis Roederer Cristal, two Champagnes scored 99 points and 98 points by Antonio Galloni (Vinous) respectively. Italy also makes an appearance, with Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri Sassicaia 2016, which was scored 100 points by Monica Larner (The Wine Advocate).

Which are the most-traded wines on Liv-ex?

The most-traded wines by value in the Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000, with a few exceptions, were unsurprisingly some of the most expensive brands in the fine wine market. Two vintages of Château Lafite Rothschild and three of Pétrus featured on the list, as well as Carruades de Lafite 2020.

This trend extended beyond Bordeaux, with the 2019 vintages of Sassicaia and Opus One representing Tuscany and California. Both of these wines as well as the 2014 vintage of Cristal also made it to the list of most-traded wines by volume, which despite being dominated by Bordeaux wines, is a bit more diverse than the most-traded wines by value.

The search interest in Château Beychevelle translated into trading activity, as the 2020 vintage of the wine topped the most-traded wines by both value and volume.

Interestingly, Château Beychevelle Market Prices are 74.6% correlated with age, meaning it follows the traditional pricing pattern for fine wine whereby its value increases with age. Newer vintages such as the 2019 or 2020 thus offer relative value compared to their peers. The Fair Value chart below shows that unlike the 2019, the 2020 vintage falls on the fair value line, making it an attractive opportunity.

Liv-ex members on Silver packages and above have access to the Fair Value tool, which lets them explore the correlation between wines’ Market Prices and age or critic scores.

Over the coming weeks, Liv-ex members will receive weekly updates outlining the most in-demand wines in each of the Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000’s sub-indices (the Bordeaux 500, Champagne 50, Italy 100, etc).
