Critical response
The Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutiérrez scored the wine 95 points, noting that ‘2020 was a very dry and low-yielding year’ that nonetheless produced ‘a healthy crop with concentration and ripeness, which led to a ‘powerful and quite classical’ wine.
Joaquín Hidalgo (Vinous) rated the 2020 vintage 96 points, praising its ‘vibrant mouthfeel’ and ‘precise balance’ of this ‘meticulously-crafted red’.
Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) awarded this ‘wonderfully fragrant and well-judged’ wine 97 points, calling it ‘a brilliant vintage of this landmark Argentinian wine’.
Fair Value analysis
As mentioned above, some recent back vintages of Nicolás Catena Zapata carry a higher score from The Wine Advocate than today’s release but are available at a discount to the 2020 vintage’s release price. The 2016, 2018 and 2019 vintages, which were all scored 96 points by the publication, are available for 31.3%, 21.5% and 25.3% less than today’s release respectively.
Older, higher-scored vintages (97-points and above) of the wine, such as the 2008, cost over £1,000 per case.
