As we come to the end of summer, we turn our attention to the upcoming La Place Autumn Releases.
What is La Place de Bordeaux?
La Place de Bordeaux is one the world’s oldest established wine marketplaces.
Originally a hub for distributing Bordeaux’s finest wines, La Place is a three-tier system where producers sell their wine to a network of over 300 négociants (via a middleman, known as a courtier), who then sell the wine to merchants around the world.
What are La Place Autumn Releases?
Aside from the spring/summer Bordeaux En Primeur releases, La Place Autumn (or September) releases are perhaps the second-most prominent in the wine calendar. The wines released are mostly from major global producers outside of Bordeaux.
The campaign originated with the Chilean brand Almaviva (a project of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild) releasing wines in 1998 and has now expanded to include over 100 different wines from Argentina, Australia, the USA, New Zealand, Austria, Chile, China, Italy, Spain, South Africa and Uruguay. Some French wines from regions other than Bordeaux have even joined the campaign, such as major Champagne houses and producers from the Rhône.
This shift away from Bordeaux-centric trade reflects the gradual broadening of the secondary fine wine market and may be especially welcome following a costly En Primeur 2022 campaign which left many wondering what the point of the current distribution is.
The pace of the Autumn Releases campaign is very different from that of En Primeur. Instead of Bordeaux châteaux reacting to neighbours’ release prices, which this year led to increasing price rises throughout the campaign, the September releases follow a mostly predetermined calendar. It is hoped that the producers releasing their wines this autumn will treat En Primeur 2022 as a cautionary tale and take the cautious market sentiment into account when pricing their wine.
Which wines will be released during La Place Autumn Releases 2023?
Over 100 wines from across the world are expected to be released over the next few weeks. Liv-ex will be covering 35 of these, providing insights ranging from critic ratings to pricing analysis.
The release blogs will be free for all and will be shared in real-time on our social media websites (Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook). They will also appear on our website when they are live.
