As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Cos d’Estournel Blanc 2022 has been released at €123.60 per bottle ex-négociant, up 16.6% on the 2021 release (€106 per bottle).
It is being offered by the international trade for £1,480 per 12×75, a 17.5% increase on the 2021’s opening price (£1,260 a case).
The new release is one of the most expensive vintages on the market. Buyers looking for value might consider the 2018 and 2020 vintages. See more pricing analysis below.
Critics’ scores
Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a barrel range of 91-93 points, remarking on the ‘lightly spiced and pleasing finish’. He predicts that ‘this joyful Cos d’Estournel Blanc should provide at least a decade’s drinking pleasure’.
James Suckling gave it a barrel range of 96-97 points. In his tasting note, he describes it as ‘full-bodied with plenty of fruit and bright acidity’.
Jean-Marc Quarin scored it 95 points. He commented that ‘this fine wine seduces the palate with its power and fine fatness’.
Fair Value analysis
According to the chart above, buyers looking for value among back vintages might be interested in the 2020. It was scored 93 points by Neal Martin (Vinous), similar to the 2022, and it is available at a discount of 33.5% to today’s release.
The 92-point 2018 might also be of interest; it is available at a discount of 29.1% to the 2022.
With a few more years in bottle and a score of 92 points from Neal Martin, the 2015 vintage is also attractive, available at a 22.6% discount to today’s release.
