Château Mouton Rothschild 2022 released En Primeur

  • Château Mouton Rothschild 2022 has been released at £6,216 per 12×75.  
  • ‘Perhaps how the 1986 tasted in its youth,’ said Neal Martin who rated it 96-98 points. 
  • Buyers looking for value might want to consider the 2014, 2016 and 2019. 

As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Mouton Rothschild 2022 has been released at €516 per bottle ex-négociant, up 22.9% on the 2021 release (€420 per bottle).  

It is being offered by the international trade for £6,216 per 12×75, a 21.9% increase on the 2021’s opening price (£5,100 a case).  

At this price, the 2016, 2014 and 2019 look better value in relation to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.

Critics’ scores  

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a barrel range of 96-98, calling it ‘a Mouton-Rothschild determined to make a statement’. He makes note of the ‘powerful, almost burly’ profile, saying it ‘feels a bit like tasting Thor’s hammer at the moment’. He is overall optimistic, though: ‘It is, perhaps, how the 1986 tasted in its youth’.  

‘A legend in the making’, writes Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Wine Independent) who scored the wine at 98-100 points. She highlights its ‘explosive, intense’ flavours, adding that ‘it is amazing how classical this Mouton is.  

Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) gave the wine a score of 98 points, recommending that the wine ‘needs a long time before approaching’, but is a ‘thoroughly enjoyable experience’.  

‘In a word: magnificent’, says Antonio Galloni (Vinous) who rated it at a range of 96-98 points.  

Fair Value analysis  

Using Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology, prices for Château Mouton Rothschild are 58.2% correlated to Neal Martin scores. Looking at the chart below, today’s release is coming to the market above the regression line.  

Buyers looking for other opportunities might want to consider the 2016 vintage, which has a Neal Martin (Vinous) score of 99 points. It comes at a small premium of 3.8% to today’s release.  

The 2014 might also be of interest, which holds a score of 97 points and sits well below the Fair Value line. It has a Market Price of £4,599, a 26.0% discount to today’s release. Likewise, the 97-point 2019 is available at a 10.1% discount to the 2022.
