As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château La Gaffelière 2022 has been released at €56 per bottle ex-négociant, up 16.7% on the 2021 release (€48 per bottle).
It is being offered by the international trade for £684 per 12×75, an 18.8% increase on the 2021’s opening price (£576 a case).

Last year, La Gaffelière made headlines when it announced that it would be withdrawing from the St-Émilion classification. In its second vintage outside the classification, Liv-ex members ranked La Gaffelière among the top ten best-value wines of the vintage in this year’s En Primeur Survey.
Critics’ scores
Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a barrel range of 95-97 points, saying that the 2022 La Gaffelière ‘continues this Saint-Émilion’s strong run of form in recent years’.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) gave it an even more generous barrel range of 98-100 points, praising the ‘drop-dead gorgeous’ wine and its ‘refined, sculpted and wonderfully precise’ character. He concluded that it is ‘simply breathtaking’.
Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) scored it a 96, highlighting the ‘mouthwateringly sappy tannins’ in a wine that manages to be ‘juicy and approachable’ as well as ‘muscular and stacked’.

Buyers looking for other opportunities might want to consider the2019 vintage. It boasts one of the highest Neal Martin (Vinous) scores from the last ten vintages (96 points), and is available at a discount of 16.4% to today’s release. The 2020 carries the same score and is available for a slightly lower discount of 14.0%, sitting on the Fair Value line.
The lower-scoring 2018 and 2021 vintages also fall at or below the line and are available at discounts of 12.3% and 18.1% respectively to today’s release.
