Opportunities in Léoville Barton back vintages
There is no significant correlation between Léoville Barton Market Prices and Neal Martin scores – the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology.
Using the chart above, buyers looking for value might be interested in the 2017 vintage, which scored 94 points from Neal Martin and has a Market Price of £570 per case – a 26.9% discount on this year’s release.
The 2020 might also be an interesting opportunity, holding a Neal Martin score of 95 points and available at a discount of 6.9% to the 2022 release. The 95-point 2015 is also available at a more modest discount of 5.1% to the 2022, and comes with a few years in bottle.
It’s worth nothing that the 2016 was named Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year in 2019. Like other past winners, it experienced a decent spike in Market Price which has endured through today, as seen in the chart above.
While there is no significant correlation with Neal Martin scores, Château Léoville Barton prices are 71% correlated to Wine Advocate scores.
According to the chart above, the 2019 looks attractive even at a 5.5% premium to the 2022 release. It scored an impressive 97 points from William Kelley (Wine Advocate), who called it ‘one of the finest wines from this château in recent times’ and compared it to the ‘brilliant’ 1985 Barton.
Another interesting opportunity is the 2014, which scored 94 points from Wine Advocate and is currently available at a 23.1% discount to this year’s release.
