Jane Anson’s top-scoring Léoville Las Cases
Last week Jane Anson published her scores from a retrospective of Château Léoville Las Cases.
In the report, Anson said that she ‘often call[s] Las Cases the most Burgundian wine of Bordeaux, because it can frustrate and delight in equal measure’.
However, she added ‘if you are lucky enough to catch it at the exact right moment, it blows everything else out of the water.’
Her top-scoring wine was the 2016 vintage, which she awarded a perfect 100 points. In her tasting note, she said the wine ‘is flying high and will only get better and better over time’.
Anson gave the 2009 and 1989 vintages her the second-highest scores, with both receiving 98 points.
Anson’s top-scoring wines can be seen in the table above. The full report and tasting notes can be found here.
Opportunities for Léoville Las Cases
Using Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology, Léoville Las Cases prices are 56% correlated to Neal Martin and 55% to Wine Advocate scores.
The methodology hypothesises that, over time, wines will tend toward their ‘Fair Value’ price (i.e. the line of regression).
Typically, though not always, the most ‘undervalued’ wines provide the best potential returns as the price moves up to ‘Fair Value’ in the secondary market, whereas ‘overvalued’ wines might underperform going forward.
When comparing to Wine Advocate scores, the 98-point 2015, 2017 and 2019 vintages fall below the line.

Whereas, Neal Martin scores suggest that the 2006, 2008, 2014, 2015, 2019 and 2020 might represent relative value.
