Lynch Bages 2014 named Jane Anson’s wine of the year
On Friday, Jane Anson named Château Lynch Bages 2014 her wine of the year. Earlier this month, the wine traded at an all-time high of £1,025 per 12×75 – a 78% increase on its release price of £575 per case.
Anson stated that to become her wine of the year, the wine needed ‘excellence’ but also ‘a story’ and ‘a memory that elevates it to something beyond itself’.
She explained that compared to last year’s wine of the year – Petrus 2000 – this year’s choice was ‘far less obvious’. ‘It wasn’t from a celebrated vintage and can be found for around €140 per bottle in the French market’.
However, the reason for its victory was because ‘Château Lynch Bages 2014 stood out as a wonderful example of what makes Bordeaux a region that wine lovers return to again and again’.
Indeed, Lynch Bages has remained a favourite on the fine wine market in recent years. The wine has featured in the Liv-ex Power 100 – our annual list of the most powerful fine wine brands – every year since its inception in 2008.
This year the wine ranked 87th overall but placed 12th for its trade volume and value.
As the chart below shows, Lynch Bages has also outperformed the broader Left Bank 200 index over the past year – albeit by a small amount.
There are several interesting opportunities in back vintages. The 2019, for example, was awarded 96 points by Neal Martin (Vinous) and is available for a small discount to the 2014.
