Telmo Rodriguez’s Yjar 2018 has been released for €72 per bottle ex-négociant, up 24.1% on the 2017’s opening price. The wine is being offered internationally for £1,140 per 12×75 case.
This is the second vintage of Yjar – and one of the few Spanish wines sold through La Place de Bordeaux. About 5,700 bottles were produced, 18% less than last year.
Critical opinion
Yjar comes from a vineyard, ‘which is tucked in a 3.8ha limestone-dominant corner of the bigger Remelluri estate,’ according to Jane Anson; however, it is a separate project to the flagship domain.
The critic gave the new release 98-points and added that ‘this was the wine I was most looking forward to trying again for the September Releases, and it does not disappoint’. She observed that ‘the 2018 is now four years since harvest and still has the raspberry violet blush of a young wine,’ adding that it had ‘so much complexity and nuance’.
The wine also received 96+ points from The Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutiérrez. He said that ‘this has a more modern profile than the other wines from Remelluri, with more sophisticated tannins, a wine that is different, ripe and powerful, with the depth of the Remelluri wines’.
Meanwhile, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) awarded it 96-points and called it ‘a gorgeous wine’.
Fair Value
Today’s release costs 9.6% more than the Market Price of the similarly scored 2017 vintage.
The 2017 Yjar, which ‘sold out in hours’ upon release, according to The Drinks Business, recently set a new trading high on Liv-ex. The wine changed hands at £1,052 per 12×75, up 13.9% on its release price.
It remains to be seen whether the new vintage release is set for a similar success.
