As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Margaux 2021 has been released at €420 per bottle ex-négociant, down 2.8% on the 2020’s opening price. Volumes released are 20% down on last year.
It is being offered by the international trade for £5,100 per 12×75. The 2012 and 2017 vintages look better value compared to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.
Critics’ scores
Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the 2021 Margaux a barrel range of 94-96 points. He described it as ‘surprisingly plush given the growing season’ and said that ‘the concentration is very impressive with no hard edges’.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) gave it 95-97, noting that the 2021 ‘is a rich, penetrating Margaux that is going to need a lot of time’.
William Kelley (The Wine Advocate) rated it 95-97+ points. The First Growth also ranked amongst Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW’s favourite wines, achieving a score of 95-97 points.
The wine also received 97-98 points from James Suckling, 95 points from Jane Anson and 97 points from Falstaff.
Fair Value analysis
Prices for Margaux show the highest correlation (57%) to James Suckling’s scores. Liv-ex members on Silver packages or higher can explore more via the Fair Value tool.
Today’s opening price comes at around an 8.5% premium to the price implied by Liv-ex’s Fair Value methodology. Buyers looking for value might be interested in the similarly scored 2017, which is available for a 16.9% discount.
The 2012 vintage also looks more attractive. The 96-point wine offers bottle age and costs 17.6% less than today’s release.
Buyers might also consider the higher scored 2016 vintage, which comes at 15.5% premium but still offers value.
