The broadest measure of the market, the Liv-ex 1000 index, rose 1.6% in May to close at 468.12. Unlike in April, when three of its sub-regional indices dipped, fine wine prices increased across all regions.
The Liv-ex 100 index also went up 0.7% last month.
Burgundy and the Rhône drive the broader market in May

Once again, the Burgundy 150 was the best-performing regional sub-index. The index, which went up 3.1% in May, has risen 22.3% so far this year. Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 was its top-performing label last month, rising 25.0%.
The second-best performing index was the Rhône 100, up 2.3%. Its performance was led by M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon’s 2014 and 2013 vintages and E. Guigal Côte Rôtie Chateau d’Ampuis’ 2011 and 2012.
Meanwhile, the Italy 100 saw the smallest increase (0.2%) as a few wines from Barolo dipped in value.
What is the Liv-ex 1000 index?
The Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000 Index is broadest measure of the market. It represents the price movement of 1000 of the most sought-after fine wines on the world’s most active and liquid marketplace. Stretching back over 20 years, the Liv-ex 1000 is comprised of seven sub-indices from across the world: the Bordeaux 500, the Bordeaux Legends 40, the Burgundy 150, the Champagne 50, the Rhone 100, the Italy 100 and the Rest of the World 60.
All Liv-ex indices are calculated using our Mid Price; the mid-point between the highest live bid and lowest live offer on the market. These are the firm commitments to buy and sell at that price; transactional data rather than list prices. It represents the actual trading activity of 600 of the world’s leading fine wine merchants. Because Liv-ex doesn’t itself trade, this data is truly independent and reliable.
