In the 2021 Power 100, five Piedmont brands made the list. Today we look at the price performance of these domains’ most-traded labels.

Five Piedmont estates made the 2021 Power 100 list. All of them are in still high demand, especially Comm. G.B. Burlotto and Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio, whose top traded labels have risen over 50% in price over the past year.

The Liv-ex Power 100 ranks the most powerful fine wine brands in the secondary market using five criteria, including price performance, trading performance, number of wines and vintages traded and average price of the wines in a brand.

In recent years, Italian wines have been growing in prominence on the secondary market and took  15% of total trade by value in both 2020 and 2021. Historically, Tuscany led Italian trade in the secondary market but Piedmont is seeing increased activity.

The table below shows the most traded labels by volume from the five Piedmont brands that made the 2021 Power 100 list, and their average trade prices over the last year.

Of these five producers, Comm. G.B. Burlotto’s Barolo Monvigliero has been the best-performing label, up 53% over one year. Both its 2016 and 2013 vintages have 100-point scores from Antonio Galloni (Vinous).

Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio Barolo Monprivato has also attracted attention and been the second most-traded label. Its average trade price has climbed by 51.8% since May 2021.

Although Barolo wines are the best performers overall, there is one Barbaresco that stands out. La Spinetta Barbaresco Vigneto Starderi has seen an average price increase of 27.8% in the past year.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) rated the 2016 vintage, calling it ‘outrageously beautiful’ and a ‘rock star wine’.
