Antonio Galloni recently published his scores for the 2019 Super Tuscans on Vinous. The 2019 vintage in Tuscany was generally viewed as ‘tricky’, with frosts and rains early in the year reducing potential yields.

A dry summer helped correct this rocky start and the vintage is, ‘revealing itself to be full of surprises’, said Galloni.

Galloni reserved his highest score for the ‘fabulous’ Masseto 2019. It is the first year that the wine has included Cabernet Franc (10%) and Galloni found it ‘silky gracious and super-refined’.

Few of the vintage’s leading Super Tuscans have been released yet. Those that have include Ornellaia, which Galloni said had, fabulous class and pedigree to burn’. He added it has the highest level of Cabernet Sauvignon since the 2002 vintage.

There was a lower score for Sassicaia, which Galloni rated just 94+. He commented that it was, ‘restrained and also a bit reticent in its first impression’ and its tannins, ‘are not as polished as they usually are’.

Nonetheless, he added that it was a ‘classic feeling Sassicaia that is going to need a number of years to open’.

The wine’s release last month sparked immediate interest on the secondary market. Released for £1,990 per dozen, it now has a Market Price of £2,709 per 12.
