Neal Martin has awarded one of his rare 100-point scores to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s 2019 Romanée-Conti.
Published in Vinous, the scores cover the whole range of wines from the stable of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti that were presented in London earlier this month.
Both La Tâche and Romanée-St-Vivant were score 98-points, but it was top marks for the ‘perfectly balanced and bewitchingly pure’ Romanée-Conti.
Surprisingly, this is the first 100-point score Martin has awarded to DRC since he regularly began tasting the range in 2011 (first for The Wine Advocate and now Vinous). The only other vintages of Romanée-Conti he has awarded 100-points on separate occasions are the 2005 and 1999.
Two other vintages of Romanée-Conti have come close to a perfect score from Martin; the 2015 and 2012. Despite their high scores, they are not the most expensive back vintages available today.
Indeed, the 2018 (which currently has a barrel score of 96-98 from Martin) commands the highest price – and it has not been scored by other major publications.
The 2016 (98-points) and the 2015 (99-points) both have better (confirmed) scores than the 2018 but are less expensive. That said, production of the 2018 was limited.
Looking at the chart above, it’s clear that the 2012 currently looks a little undervalued versus other back vintages, certainly of a similar critical score.
