Critical opinion
The 2018 Cheval des Andes received 98-points from James Suckling, who said that “this will be a great wine indeed”. Suckling described it as “very long and structured yet controlled and in balance”.
Other major critics are yet to rate today’s offering.
Where is the value?
Followers of Suckling may wish to look back at last year’s 100-point release, which he described as “the greatest Cheval des Andes ever”.
The 2017, which also received 97+ points from The Wine Advocate, costs £648 per case. The 2016 (JS 99, WA 97+) presents another attractive alternative at £630 per case.
Buyers looking for a bit of age may also wish to consider the 2014 (WA 97). Luis Gutiérrez said that this was “a different blend than previous years and contains a high percentage of Malbec and more Petit Verdot than Cabernet Sauvignon”. The wine comes at just a 1.7% premium to today’s release.
