- The 2018 Clos Apalta has been released for £858 per 12×75.
- James Suckling scored it 98-points, saying it was “delicious to drink already”.
- The 100-point 2014 looks good value at present.
The 2018 Clos Apalta from Casa Lapostolle has been released for €69 per bottle ex-négociant. It is being offered in London for £858 per dozen (£429 per six).
The ex-négoce price is the same as the 2017’s release. The 2017 with a current Market Price of £855 is very slightly cheaper, however.
Critical response
James Suckling is (so far) the only major critic to have tasted the new releases coming out of South America this autumn.
He awarded the 2018 98-points, calling it “aromatic”, with “gorgeous length” and “fine tannins that are very fresh and refined”.
He added it was “delicious” now but would improve with three to four years cellaring.
Fair value
There are three back vintages that carry 100-points from Suckling that look good value versus today’s release.
The 2017, as already mentioned, is a little cheaper at £855 and comes in a limited edition bottle to mark the wine’s 20th anniversary.
The 2015 meanwhile is available for £849 (12×75) and the 2014 looks the best value among all back vintages (given its score) with a Market Price of £778 – a 9% discount to today’s release.
The 99-point 2016 at £840 also looks to offer value relative to the 2018.
