“This’ll have you smitten from the first sip: silky-smooth with immense depth and harmony,” Martin said. Galloni called it “impressive” and “stunning”. He declared that “this is shaping up to be one of the wines of the year”.
The wine received 97-99 points from Jeb Dunnuck, who commented that “winemaker Jean-Luc Thunevin has hit a home run in the vintage, and his 2020 Château Valandraud is unquestionably up with the crème de la crème out there”.
James Suckling gave it 97-98 and described it as “full-bodied, extremely long and exciting”.
Fair Value
In terms of price, the 2020 release is positioned below the 2018 and 2016 vintages but above some higher scored vintages such as the 2019 and 2015.
The 2015 looks particularly attractive with 98-points from Neal Martin (the highest Benchmark Critic score) despite being available for 7% less.
Older vintages like the 2012 also offer good value for money with 95-points from Martin but at a 27% discount to today’s release.
