The second wine of Château Pichon Comtesse, Réserve de la Comtesse 2020, has been released En Primeur for €32.80 per bottle ex-négociant.
The wine is being offered for £402 per case by the international trade. This is an increase of 31% on the current Market Price of the 2019.
The new release looks fully priced when considering back vintages of this wine. The 2019 and 2018 vintages are less expensive and seem better value. See more Fair Value analysis below.
Critical Opinion
Many critics have spoken of the how approachable the 2020 Réserve de la Comtesse is at present. “The 2020 Réserve de la Comtesse is absolutely gorgeous. Far more expressive than the grand vin today, the Réserve is everything a second wine should be,” said Vinous’ Antonio Galloni (91-93).
Neal Martin (90-92) added it was very “harmonious on the nose” and “should give 12–15 years of drinking pleasure”.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (91-93), said: “This is a very different style from the grand vin, possessing a more playful, upfront and effortlessly delicious character that truly draws you in.”
Fair Value
Réserve de la Comtesse has a close correlation with age, meaning today’s release is fully-priced versus recent back vintages. The 2019 with its higher score of 92-94 from Martin is around £100 cheaper per case.
The 2016 and 2017, both scored 92 by Martin are also available at significant discounts, as is the 2018 which has a score of 91-points.
