  • The wine has been released internationally for £864 (12×75).
  • “One of the classiest offerings…in recent years,” thought Neal Martin.
  • The 2020 wine will be presented in a limited-edition bottle to mark the estate’s centenary.

Château Léoville Poyferré 2020 has been released En Primeur for €72 per bottle ex-négociant, up 46% on the 2019’s opening price.

The wine is being offered for £864 per case by the international trade. This is 23% more than the current Market Price of the 2019.

The 2019 looks good value compared to today’s release, though the high scores and special label may tempt some buyers. See more Fair Value analysis below.

Critical Opinion

Critical appraisal of the wine has been positive. Both Neal Martin and Antonio Galloni (Vinous) scored it 95-97. “In a word: magnificent,” said Galloni.

“A very suave and sophisticated wine that will give 30–40 years of drinking pleasure. Easily one of the classiest offerings from this Saint-Julien in recent years,” said Martin.

“Well structured, it sets its feet deep in the ground and will need time to soften and develop,” said Jane Anson who awarded a score of 96.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW scored it 95-97 and James Suckling 96-97.

Fair Value

The 2020 is one of several wines this vintage (including Cos d’Estournel) which will be presented in a black and gold bottle.

The estate’s strongest correlation is with Wine Advocate scores. By this measure it looks Fair Value, although there are back vintages that also look compelling.

The 2019 has a score of 94-points from the Wine Advocate but Neal Martin gave it a much stronger score of 97 and at a 23% discount it presents an obvious alternative among back vintages.
