The Italy 100 has been one of the top performing Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000 sub-indices over the past year. The Italy 100 is up 11.31% since April 2020, beating the performance of the Bordeaux 500 and the Liv-ex 1000.

The FTSE 100 has outperformed these three indices in that time, although the margin is not as large as one would think and the FTSE 100 performed with a much greater degree of volatility.

With Italy’s rise in price performance has come a rise in market share by value. In the one-year period charted above, Italian market share by value totalled 16%, up from 8.8% in 2019 and 5.7% in 2016.

Tuscany still dominates trade share by value within the Italian category, but it continues to cede some of that share to Piedmont and the less represented regions of Italy, as seen in the chart below.

Veneto can be considered the ‘best of the rest’ as it has the highest trade share by value outside of Piedmont and Tuscany. The region has been on the up of late, Quintarelli Giuseppe from Veneto broke into the 2020 Power 100 at 95, having risen 111 places from 2019. Three more brands from Veneto qualified for Power 100 inclusion but all fell outside the Top 100.
