LIVE opportunities: critics are divided on the rankings of Bordeaux 2019 and 2020

Seven major critics, at the time of writing, have released their scores for Bordeaux 2020.

Using the scores for wines in the Bordeaux 500 index, it is clear that there is a divide between the vintages.

The Bordeaux 500

Across Bordeaux 500 wines. James Suckling awarded the highest average scores for the 2019 and 2020 vintages. However, 2020 came out slightly ahead with an average score of 97.7 compared to 2019’s 97.2.

Score: 1-0 to 2020

Jeff Leve awarded the second highest average critic score to 2020 Bordeaux 500 wines; 50% of his scores awarded were between a 97.5 and 99. His 2020s had an average score of 97.1, compared to 2019’s 96.8.

Score: 2-0 to 2020

Jane Anson and Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW both awarded an average score of 96.1 to 2020, just a touch below their 96.6 average scores for 2019.

Score: tied 2-2

Without 2019 scores from Rod Smith or Falstaff in our database it came down to the scores of Jean-Marc Quarin.

Jean-Marc Quarin’s average score for 2020 was 95.2, versus 95.1 for 2019.

Final score: 3-2 to 2020 by a hair.
