Champagne house Pol Roger has released the 2012 vintage of its flagship cuvee, ‘Sir Winston Churchill’.
The wine is being offered at £1,340 per 12×75 in bond. There are not currently any scores from major critics for the wine though they are expected soon.
That said, William Kelley has already described it as a “hypothetical blend” of the 2008 and 2002 vintages – with the acidic “cut” of the former and “richness” of the latter.
Depending on its ratings, therefore, at its release price it could offer good value versus those vintages and especially against the 1996 to which it has also been compared in some instances.
Made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sourced entirely from Grand Cru vineyards, this is just the 19th release of the Sir Winston Churchill cuvee.
Although a very highly rated vintage in Champagne, yields in 2012 were drastically lowered across the region due to frost and hail at the start of the season.
An excellent end to the season, however, ensured high quality and concentration in the remainder of the crop.
