Italy has been something of a sleeping giant. It is excluded from the USTR tariff drama, remains free of classification scandals, and is without En Primeur complexities. All these factors combined to lift Italian wines in 2020, and this buoyancy has continued into the New Year. Now, Italy offers trading opportunities across an ever-increasing number of wines.
Skyrocketing value
In the first quarter of this year, wine trade by value is up 124.8% on 2020, with similar increases seen in volumes, trades and distinct LWINs traded. There has been a 45% increase in the number of unique buyers.
The region has captured 17% of trade share by value so far in 2021, up from 15.1% in 2020 and 8.8% in 2019.
Region by region
As in 2020, Barolo is the most traded sub-region in Italy. Tuscany remains in second place, but Brunello di Montalcino has jumped three places and is now the third most traded sub-region by value in 2021.
It’s followed by Bolgheri and Barbaresco, to wrap up the top five. The list doesn’t stop there, however, as another 40 sub-regions of Italy have also been traded on the secondary market this year, nearly twice that of 2020.

Italian activity on the exchange surpassed £10m earlier this month, putting close to par with the Burgundy market.
