The 2020 Power 100 was published last week and there was an Italian surge into the top 100. For the first time in the list’s history there were four Italian brands in the top 10 – Gaja (3), Sassicaia (4), Ornellaia (6), Masseto (9) – with another thirteen rounding off the top 100.
Italy shined bright on price performance with five Italian Brands included in the top 10 best price performers of 2020 –Solaia (Antinori) was at number one.
Italy’s 17 spots in the top 100 is the third largest, following that of Burgundy and Bordeaux. But while Bordeaux and Burgundy both saw their share fall from 2019, Italy saw its more than double.
The 2020 Power 100 reflects what we have observed in the broader market. Italy’s market share by value increased from 8.8% in 2019 to 15.1% in 2020 and already in 2021, it has grown to 18.2%. Might there be more entrants to come this year?
