This week, Wine Spectator has gradually revealed its top ten wines of the year, cumulating with the announcement of its top wine today. This is part of their annual Top 100 which will be released on Monday.
The Wine Spectator commented that “the Top 100 is a snapshot of the year in wine. You’ll find some of the best wines from leading grape varieties and famous appellations, particularly in our Top 10. Comfort wines from producers with reliable track records figure prominently on our list this year, a nod to staying home and enjoying your favorite reds, whites, sparklers and rosés in safety”.
Marques Murrieta, Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2010 – Wine of the year
“Great wineries are not made in a day” explained the Wine Spectator, adding “patience has paid off for Vicente Dalmau Cebrian-Sagarriga who steered the historic Rioja bodega to new heights over the past 20 years”.
They chose to award the flagship bottling, Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2010 their 2020 Wine of the Year.
Thomas Matthews, who covers the region, described the wine as “maturing well” and “this round red is a lovely example of the traditional style”. He found “orange peel, dried cherry, forest floor, vanilla, and black tea flavors mingle harmoniously over round tannins and citrusy acidity”.
The wine first traded at £792 per 12×75 in May this year. The wine traded this afternoon at £1020 per 12×75, a 29% increase.
