It’s Wine Spectator Wine of the Year week and so far, we’ve seen increased activity around a number of the wines that have been announced (2nd – 10th). The top wine from the publication is set to be unveiled at 4 pm GMT today.
If last year’s announcement provides a hint of what’s to come then there will a flurry of activity on the secondary market, seen by the chart of Leoville Barton 2016 below. Upon announcement last year, prices for Leoville Barton reached as high as £1,168 per 12×75 before settling around £910 per case, a 22.3% increase from UK release.

A question posed was whether the decline of Bordeaux’s market share by value has reached a floor. Its share fell as low as 35% in August and has since held between that and 40% on a weekly and monthly basis.
Burgundy (26.4%) had one its best weeks of the year as some high-priced wines from the region changed hands.
Italy (13.0%) was active, continuing its strong run this year. JebDunnuck.com affirmed this growing interest in the region with the announcement this week that master sommelier Audrey Frick will be joining the publication to cover the wines of Italy.
The Rhone (5.1%) added to its previous week’s share while Champagne (7.9%), USA (6.3%) and Others (2.3%) all drifted.
Bollinger La Grand Annee 2012 was the top traded wine of the week. On Monday afternoon The Wine Spectator revealed it as the publication’s 10th best wine of 2020. Prices for the bubbles reached as high as £870 after the announcement.
Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2000 and its famous gold Augsburg Ram found action at £18,240 per 12×75. The wine peaked at £19,400 per 12×75 in January 2019 but has since drifted 6%.
